Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) is a tuition-free, federally funded day school serving deaf and hard-of-hearing students from birth through grade 8. KDES is operated by the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center at Gallaudet University under the federal Education of the Deaf Act. There is no tuition; breakfast and lunch are free; bus transportation within 15 miles of the U.S. Capitol is free; audiological services and family ASL classes are included. KDES delivers a fully bilingual American Sign Language (ASL) and English learning environment with a 1:5 staff-to-student ratio and 100% bilingual teacher rate. Open to deaf and hard-of-hearing students residing in the Washington metropolitan area (DC, MD, VA), ages birth through 15.
