Schools in Marshall Heights

Marshall Heights is a Ward 7 neighborhood east of the Anacostia River, known for its strongly charter-dominated school landscape — seven of its eight schools are public charter schools, reflecting the broader trend of charter expansion in Ward 7 over the past two decades. This charter concentration gives Marshall Heights families unusual breadth of choice. Instructional models range from traditional college-prep programs and Montessori approaches to dual-language immersion and STEM academies. Achievement Prep, KIPP DC, and Friendship PCS all operate campuses that serve Marshall Heights students. The neighborhood is accessible via Benning Road and East Capitol Street corridors, with Metrobus connections to the Benning Road and Capitol Heights Metro stations on the Blue and Silver lines. Marshall Heights borders Watts Branch Park, one of Ward 7's green spaces along the Watts Branch tributary. Ward 7 residents have priority access to Ward 7 schools through the DC lottery. Because charter schools here are popular citywide, Ward 7 families are strongly encouraged to submit lottery applications in November — the earlier the submission, the better the priority processing within the equitable access model.
