Schools in Edgewood

Edgewood is a Ward 5 neighborhood in Northeast DC, between Brookland and Eckington, home to six schools — all public charter schools. The neighborhood has seen significant residential development in recent years, with new apartment buildings along Rhode Island Avenue NE attracting young families who find Edgewood's transit access and proximity to the Red Line particularly appealing. The charter schools in Edgewood span elementary through high school grades, with several of DC's higher-profile charter networks operating campuses here. KIPP DC, E.L. Haynes, and other established charter organizations have made Edgewood one of Ward 5's charter-dense corridors. The Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Metro station (Red line) serves Edgewood directly, providing fast connections to downtown DC and Union Station. The neighborhood borders Brookland to the north and Trinidad to the south, giving families a wide radius of additional school options within a short Metro or bus ride. Ward 5 residents receive a priority point when applying to Ward 5 schools through the DC charter lottery. Given that Edgewood's schools are all charters with competitive applicant pools, Ward 5 families should submit applications at the earliest possible date in November to maximize priority processing.
